Dr. John Nash
(June 13, 1928 - May 23, 2015)
Analysis by Dr. SRINIVASA SRIKANTH, Pielytics, Editor-At-Charge
originally published in Pielytics
“An equation for me has no meaning, unless it expresses a thought of God.”
―
Srinivasa Ramanujan
“Because the ideas I had about supernatural beings came to me the
same way that my mathematical ideas did. So I took them seriously.”
―
John Nash
"He is such a powerful soul. I am glad I had the opportunity to share
the room with him. His presence stimulated me a good deal. While asleep
I had an unusual experience. There was a red screen formed by flowing
blood as it were. I was observing it. Suddenly a hand began to write on
the screen. I became all attention. That hand wrote a number of results
in elliptic integrals. They stuck to my mind. As soon as I woke up, I
committed them to writing."
―
Srinivasa Ramanujan (1911)
"This man is a genius."
- Professor Duffin on Dr Nash in his reference letter, which had only this line
This
story (encompasses "Analytics Pie or Pielytics", "Eyeperspective", "Health-O-Health",
"LifeHackingQuotes", "JollyWood" and "TimelessJewels" all in one place),
will compare and contrast real story with reel story in the mode
of alternate reality that was captured in movies such as, Sliding Doors
or maybe, even true reality. To give you a feeler on what this story is
about, here is a brief snapshot of what is in store.
Dr
Nash, who got his Nobel Prize in 1994, and Abel Prize in 2015,
considered as one of the brightest minds of his era and even now, had a
notable track record
starting from his younger days when he completed his PhD at the age of
22. However, Dr Nash was "diagnozed" with a mental issue, which brought a
road block to
his progress for years, but with right support from individuals who saw
value of his mathematical contributions, and most importantly, from his
close family, Dr Nash surprisingly had a "remission", though he stopped
taking medicines years before. This story will dig deeper on Dr Nash's
life for you to see whether it is any different than what was presented
in Beautiful Mind.
While
the actual story will come live over here soon, please read the below
quotes of Dr Nash, and ask the question whether someone who had issues
with clarity of thoughts can present thoughts as clear as these ones in a
terse manner.
"I
began to intellectually reject some of the delusionally influenced
lines of thinking which had been characteristic of my orientation. This
began, most recognizably, with the rejection of politically-oriented
thinking as essentially a hopeless waste of intellectual effort"
―
John Nash
"But in the event the game theory ideas, which deviated somewhat from the
“line” (as if of “political party lines”) of von Neumann and
Morgenstern’s book, were accepted as a thesis for a mathematics Ph.D."
―
John Nash
"So at the present time I seem to be thinking rationally again in the
style that is characteristic of scientists. However this is not entirely
a matter of joy as if someone returned from physical disability to good
physical health. One aspect of this is that rationality of thought
imposes a limit on a person’s concept of his relation to the cosmos. For
example, a non-##### could think of ##### as simply a
madman who led millions of naive followers to adopt a cult of ritual
fire worship. But without his “madness” ##### would necessarily
have been only another of the millions or billions of human individuals
who have lived and then been forgotten.

- can represent any proven and established religion or spiritual group
("followers of celebrities and social media influencers", if we need to
relate to current times, though spirituality and spiritual followers are
certainly not the same as social media followers), though Dr Nash
specified a specific group in his autobiography/biography at the time of
Nobel Prize award ceremony (1994)
One
of those few worshipers in the Temple of Science who would still remain
should an angel of God descend and drive out of the temple all those
lesser scientists, who under different circumstances might become
politicians or captains of industry.
- "Where Is Science Going?" published in 1932, Dr Albert Einstein paid Dr Max Planck the following tribute
Upcoming:
1. Comparisons and contrasts between the two extraordinary minds, Srinivasa Ramanujan and Nash, who were gifted with extraordinary capabilities, though they were from totally different backgrounds
2. Nash's upbringing and his early life prior to "health" issues
3. Nash's focus on cooperative games, and how certain factions tend to be averse and allergic to cooperative games
4. Historical account of medicine
5. Prevailing situation between 50s and 70s
etc
- More soon.
